What this means for your pipes
Bryant grew up around the railroad. The rail line through it was finished in 1873, and the town incorporated in 1892. Interstate 30 came through in the 1950s, and growth followed it. Most of that building went in along the interstate, while the old center of town stayed much as it was. More than seven in ten of the homes here were built in 1990 or later.
Polybutylene, in most cases a gray plastic water line, went into many houses put up from 1978 to the mid-1990s.
A newer house still has a water heater that wears out. Whether one is worth repairing comes down to its age, its condition and whether parts can still be had. Sewer lines, mains and permits
Water. The city's water department delivers the water, and every gallon of it is bought wholesale from Central Arkansas Water.
Sewer. The city looks after the sewer mains and manholes. The line from your house out to the main is yours, so keeping it up falls to you or your plumber. When the sewer backs up, the city asks you to call it first, so its crew can check whether the main is the part that's blocked. If the blockage is on the city's side, we reach out to the city for you. After hours, the city's water and wastewater on-call line is (501) 943-0468.
Permits. Bryant's Planning and Development office issues plumbing permits, and its fee schedule covers repairs and replacements as well as new construction. Work that starts before the permit is issued pays a double fee. Each trade books its own inspections, so the plumber schedules the plumbing ones, from under-slab work to the final.
